I don't have many details of this climb. When I interview Jan once again I will fill in the holes.
Jan and Joost climbed the building along one of the vertical walls in the south-east corner of the building. They were already far up the wall when the security people discovered them. The security officer stormed outside and yelled: "You could have asked for permission first!" Jan yelled back: "I never do!"
The concrete in the horizontal cracks is very smooth. During the climb one of the friends popped out of a crack and Jan fell 2 metres before he was held by another friend.
On their previous climbs Jan had found out that it is necessary to put a respectable spokesman at the bottom of the climb. He can address the public and calm the police. He can also explain that there is little danger involved, that the policemen should not chase the climbers and that the climbers will come down of their own accord. For this occasion Jan had written a brochure that could be distributed to the public.
They had planned the climb on "The Queens Birthday", a national holiday. They got a nice article and a story in the regional papers (Havenloods, Rotterdams Nieuwsblad) and in the national quality newspaper (NRC).
Jan had made special tools (hooks) from steel rods (the ones used in concrete). These could be hooked around the top edge of the concrete segments. They did not work as expected. As long as you kept them under downward tension they stuck in place. If you removed the tension they dropped out. So they were only useful for holding the weight of the climber on rest-points. They could not be used to hold the rope. As soon as the rope swung in the wind they fell out of the cracks. Jan had to use friends (Camalots nr. 1) and nuts instead.
